Inside A Wasp Nest

Once the wasps were dead I was able to cut the wasps nest down and get a look inside. Here are some photographs of the inside of a wasp nest.

We saw the outside of the wasps nest in my blog post what does a wasps nest look like.

Unfortunately as these pictures are taken on my mobile phone it’s difficult to see the amazing colours woven through the paper mache but I hope this will give you some idea.

Before I took the outer layers of paper mache from the wasp nest you can see how the prote4ctive layers are formed around the cells.

Once the outer layers are removed you can see the tiers of cells inside the wasps nest.

Here you can see the wasps breaking out of their cells.

Finally the wasps nest when it was fully taken apart.

Apologies for my lack of blogging lately, it’s been a very busy period here but is coming to an end now so I shall get back to it very soon.

I do hope I get some brownie points from Roy for slightly better quality images and I hope you have enjoyed, as much as I have, looking at the fascinating way nature works and seeing inside a wasp nest.

With wasps still inside, that was brave! Amazing structures, shame they’re full of wasps though.

Sally – Thanks for the images – the quality isn’t too bad and really gives a good insight into what is inside these nests. It truly is remarkable.

Unfortunitly, I just had to remove a wasp nest due to the location and the safety of my kids. After explaining to my kids why I had to do it, I opened it up to show them the inside. All I found was 2 wasps and a white slug like figure that looked like a short worm on steroids.
Does anyone know what that would have been?

  7. Sally Says:

    Hi Todd

The short worm on steroids would be a wasp pupae, which starts off looking worm like and develops into an adult within the cell of the nest. When I took the nest above down and opened it there were wasps in every stage of development.

  8. Todd Says:

Thanks Sally- now I can tell my kids what it really was.

I had a wasp nest in my garden shed and have been placing wasp killer powder at the entrance point, slowly the wasps appear to be inactive… also at the same time i find there was a wasp nest in my mums attic,(i got stung whilst sleeping in the attic bedroom) luckily there was a black bag directly below the entrance point and i threw loads of powder there and the wasps stopped :) it was hard in the dark but i managed…….now i notice there are more wasps around but cannot see a nest as i believe its behind a partition and im not goint to investigate it. last night in the early hours i hear a purring sound and like loads of marching (best way to describe it…) so i guess theres a huge nest somewhere behind it…. this morning the rain is very heavy so ive put my head out the attic window and looked toward where i believe the sound is below…and sure enough through the rain i spotted a wasp entering under a tile, so theres my nest entrance and as soon as its dry im going to spray powder all round, and just under the tiles (without lifting them as im not falling off the table im standing on)
got to be brave but we cant afford the £65 the council want, and theres no discounts for anyone…

Tthe wasp nest we have is on the outside of a bedroom window.
Second story. Does that mean a rough winter coming?
Being stuck mostly ON the window, we get a good view without
getting stung, of their workings. Sorta of our own discovery channel. It looks just like the one in your pic. They are putting
a few “condo” sections on the outside of the nest. It started out
perfectly smooth. Fun to watch. Must say they didn’t like the
    flash on my camera. V.

  13. Sally Says:

    Hi Jessica

We found it in the greenhouse .. amazing where they will build nests.
