A romantic night on the sofa just can’t be beaten in winter but if you choose the wrong films to watch your date may just fall asleep.

For us ladies it really needs to be a romantic “chick flick” for us to get that snuggle in feeling, which let’s be honest guys is what you are trying to achieve.

So bite the bullet, leave the terminator films at home and rent one of these if you want your date to cuddle in close and get all romantic with you.

Trust me guys, some are actually worth a watch even if you aren’t a “chick”, I have chosen films I think are watchable for men as well as favourites for us women.

Dim the lights, throw some popcorn in the microwave and grab a warm blanket to snuggle under on the sofa, then press play and watch your date melt in your arms.

No 10 – Dr Zhivago

Tells the tale of love found and lost in the turbulent Russian Revolution. Watchable for men because it deals with the choices a man must make between duty, his morals and love. Watchable for women because of the depth of love and passion portrayed.

No 9 – An Officer and a Gentleman

Watchable for men because it has a story to it outside the romantic falling in love scenes, with a look at the angst of a young man trying to better himself by joining the air force.

No 8 – Titanic

Anyone can watch this, it has the true story of that fateful ship and the tragic events that led to so many deaths. It also has the romantic story of two young people falling in love on the cruise then losing each other … keep the tissues handy.

No 7 – Sliding Doors

An unusual film in that you see it twice, each time depending on whether the main character (Gwyneth Paltrow) decides to catch a London train or not. It is a look at fate and how a simple choice can lead us to love and happiness or not.

No 6 – Ladyhawke

One of my all time favourite romantic films, I can watch it again and again. The story is set in the medieval city of Aquila. It has knights and swordfights to keep the guys interested but tells the tale of a knight and his lover that were cursed by a Bishop so they can never see each other in human form. By day the knight travels with his hawk (his cursed lover) and by night she becomes human and he becomes a wolf. Will they ever find a way to lift the curse and be together again?

No 5 – Shrek

It may seem a strange choice but the comedy is fantastic and the fairy tale romance makes us girls long for a big strong man to protect us. We also love the idea that beauty is not paramount when falling in love. It is an animated film about an ogre that reluctantly saves the Princess and of course wins her heart. The donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) is where the comedy comes to life.

No 4 – Chocolat

A quirky tale of a woman and her daughter opening a chocolate shop in France and the rigid morality within the village that opposses her. Love arrives in the form of Johnny Depp as a roguish traveller. Not the usual sloppy romantic stuff so easily watchable for men.

No 3 – The Last of the Mohicans

Ask any woman who has seen the film what Daniel Day Lewis says to Madeleine Stowe under the waterfall and she will reply “I will find you”, no matter how long ago she saw the film. There is enough violence and adrenaline to keep the men happy as three trappers try to defend a Colonels daughter but plenty of heart wrenching romance for the girls.

No 2 – When Harry Met Sally

Now come on who hasn’t seen that famous cafe scene where Sally proves how easy it is to fake it?! Men can enjoy this film for it’s comedy but women love the romance. It is the story of two people who have been friends for years and are scared to get involved in case it ruins their friendship. A must see for men and women.

No 1 – Four Weddings and a Funeral

A typical British film, packed with comedy and drama. The title says it all really, it’s about a group of friends that attend four weddings and a funeral. Down to earth look at friendhip, love and that one love that can never be. An absolute must see for everyone.

There is a world of difference between loving someone, saying you love someone and showing that someone you love them.

Your thoughts and emotions are your own, your Partner cannot feel them or experience your emotions. You can say one hundred times a day that you love your partner but if you then beat them once a day those words become hollow and unbelievable.

Your partner cannot guess how you feel about them and they may be unconvinced by your declarations of love, so it is important in a healthy relationship to show your love.

Here are 5 ways you can easily show your partner you love them:

1. Don’t overdo the affection …. sounds like a strange thing to say but it’s easy to slip from affection to habit. A kiss on the lips or cheek at 7:42 every morning is simply habit and does not show love. Don’t allow your relationship to get into a routine or affection becomes mechanical. Go on be daring, have sex on the sofa on Tuesday night instead of every Saturday in bed.

2. Be playful …. life is very short and most of the time quite mundane, so play with your partner. Be spontaneous sometimes, just grab them and kiss them or pinch their bum as they walk by. While your partner is discussing something unimportant start to undress them, they may be a little shocked but just look into their eyes and say “I can’t help myself, I love you”.

3. Respect your partner. Your partner may hate lace curtains or leather sofas but because they loves you they will put with them but you both live in the same home so if you want to show your love you will compromise for something you can both enjoy living with.

4. Discuss your thoughts about your relationship, don’t allow things to get bottled up inside you if your partner is doing something you don’t like. By discussing it with them, while hugging them on the sofa, you are showing you care about them and your relationship.

5. Share, share, share!! Share the household tasks, share some of your leisure time and share your love by drawing them a bath or giving them a massage … in other words share yourself.

Some of us ladies are still thrilled when the florist van arrives at our door but before sending flowers find out what message you are sending.

Rather than just nipping in to the local petrol station or buying forced flowers from the supermarket, put a little effort in to selecting and sending flowers. However beware of what you are sending, red roses say I love you but yellow roses say we are just friends or denote jealousy. I have included which colour of flowers is the most appropriate for romance.

Most women are unaware of the meaning behind flowers so whether you send flowers yourself or through a florist make sure the card holds the information to the meaning of the flowers being sent.

Any good florist will know the meaning of the flowers, so if buying through a florist tell them the message you want to send and they will advise you on which flowers are appropriate.

10. Iris - Blue is faith and hope, purple means compliments or wisdom, white is purity and yellow is passion.

9. Acacia -Unspoken love, send these if you want to let someone know of your secret admiration.

8. Primrose – I can’t live without you (evening primose means happy in love).

7. Lilac - youthful or humility, also confidence.

6. Carnation -Fascination. Pink is maternal love, striped carnations mean refusal and say you cannot be with someone, yellow is rejection or disappointment but red means my heart aches for you or I am fascinated with you.

5. Orchid - Rare beauty, refinement, beautiful woman, long life, femininity or mature charm.

4. Lily – White is purity or virginity, yellow means walking on air but also falsehood and orange means I burn for you.

3. Tulip - Red is a declaration of love, multi coloured means you have beautiful eyes and yellow is hopelessly in love.

2. Daisy – Innocence or a loyal love.

1. Rose – Red roses say I love you but if you place red and white roses together it symbolises perfect unity. A thornless rose means I loved you at first sight. Each colour of rose has a different meaning but for love red is the only colour to send.

If a man were to send me flowers I would hope for orchids!!

How do you say I love you to someone you are dating but who doesn’t share your first language? Here are 15 ways to say I love you.

There is nothing on earth like hearing someone say from the heart “I love you”, however it can lose some of it’s romance and meaning if said in a language that is not your own.

If you are dating someone who has a different first language then make the effort and learn to say those special little words in their own language, it will make them all the more meaningful.

French – je t’aime

Italian – ti amo

German – ich liebe dich

Spanish – te quiero

Swedish – jag a’lskar dig

Russian – ya vas liubliu

Arabic – ana bahebek

Urdu – mujhe tumse mohabbat hai

Pakistani – mujhe tumse muhabbat hai

Chinese Cantonese – ngo oi ney

Chinese Mandarin – wo ai ni

Japanese – kimi o ai shiteru

Thai – pom raak kun for guys, or chan raak kun for girls

Hawaiin – aloha i’a au oe

Zulu – mena tanda wena

I shall leave the attempts at pronunciation entirely up to you.

My sincere apologies to anyones language I have managed to mangle in the process of trying to transliterate.

Now you have no excuse, get out there and tell someone you love them.

Apparently some women are not pleased by a romantic gesture – yeah right, I have yet to meet one that isn’t. However, the majority of us are just thrilled by them and just as thrilled with a small gesture as a grand gesture.

I don’t need a weekend in Paris or diamonds to make my heart melt, a well timed ball of packaging string can do the trick (it was a personal and relevant joke but it worked).

So, you are seeing a nice lady but how can you win her over with romantic gestures that do not cost the earth? From £25 to free, try some of these and watch her eyes sparkle:

Under £25

1. Send flowers to her place of work. I am sick of hearing from men that say women do not appreciate flowers ….. that is because you buy them from the petrol station, you duffus. This is one gesture where you get what you pay for. Prefer something longer lasting? MadKat do a beautifully boxed etched bowl with delicate ceramic roses for just £13.95, you can see a photo at the top of this post.

2. Molton Brown sell ‘intoxicating davana blossom body crème’ for £25. It is beautifully packaged and such a gift suggests ‘care for yourself, because I care for you’. This can be purchased through their website.

3. A keyring. We carry our keys everywhere we go and try very hard not to lose them so rather than a gift that will just be placed in a drawer why not consider something that she will carry with her. Temptation Gifts do some beautiful mugs and gifts.

2. Mathmos mobile phone charm £5.95 – they are little lights that light up when you get a call. Place one in a gift box with a card saying ‘I never want you to miss one of my calls’. You can buy them at Getting Personal

4. MadKat also do beautiful scented candles with names like ‘Leather & Lace’ and ‘Skinny Dip’ which are bound to create an atmosphere.

Under £5

1. Send an old fashioned romantic letter or card. No, an email will not do, buy a stamp you scrooge. Go on be soppy and tell her why she is special to you. For the funniest love cards around check out Fuzzydon – Love & Valentine Collection

2. Make up a cd of your favourite songs, they don’t have to be slushy, she will enjoy getting to know you better through the things you enjoy.

3. Give her your last rolo in a gift box. Doesn’t need to be the silver or gold ones, just a good old fashioned chocolate rolo – the gesture is awesome.

4. If she is a reader buy her a relevant and romantic bookmark. Again it is a regular reminder of the person that gave the gift – YOU.

FREE

1. Listen to her, read her emails, take out snippets and remember them (write them down if you have to). Does she like hedgehogs or hate dark chocolate or love the beach? These are your indicators for great dates and small inexpensive gestures. Go hedgehog watching one night, don’t buy dark chocolate and go for ice cream at the beach. The thought costs nothing, it just takes effort on your part.

2. Pay her a sincere compliment, go on tell her she is the most beautiful woman in the world – we may not believe you but we love to hear it.

3. Wait until the weather turns and take her out to dance in the rain.

4. Go star gazing or lie in a field/park and find shapes in the clouds.

5. Make her laugh – laughter is the key to happiness.

When considering a gift for her, remember that a pole for pole dancing, too sexy undies and edible body paint are gifts for you rather than her. So make your gifts relevant, personal and all about her – she is a princess so treat her like one.

Packaging gifts is so important, you can buy the nicest gift but if the packaging is awful then the gesture is spoilt. If you can’t wrap gifts nicely consider buying a special gift box, Twinklepeeps do some beautiful and sexy boxes. This is my personal favourite, it just oozes sexiness:

So gentlemen, you have no excuse as I have done all the research for you, just click on the links provided and make tha lady feel special.
