Hi Jason

I thought they were wasps as the images I looked at showed hornets have reddish brown head and thorax, whereas these were black like a wasp. Given your job perhaps you could tell me what they are?

Hi Joanne

Must admit I was so sad that I had to take our nest down but sometimes safety has to come first. If it's not somewhere the grandchildren can get to it should be fine and they sould be fascinated watching nature at work.

Havingjust read all the comments, iam now convinced ive got a wasps[or hornets nest] in my bird box!.The bird box is just above my shed and ,after close inspection, its obvious theres a tiny cone shape inside there.Add to that the flurry of activity over the last two days-the patter of tiny wings and i hardley think there could be a mistake.Ive got young grandchildren so i shall be keeping a close eye on things.I dont want to destroy them if i can help it...Hopfully -wasps and man will show some respect to each othier!

I don't think anyone likes to have wasps around their home, they are quite frightening but I think you have to admit the nest is an amazing work of nature's art.

Hi was just wondering if any of you can help me identify a wasps nest in my garage,i say nest its only the size of a golf ball and i have only seen 1 wasp going in there from the opening in the bottom, what i find facinating about it is its colour the nest that is its a very startling blue. The wasp itself is normal wasp colour yellow and black and is a very larg specimin.
Iwondered if the colour wasa direct result of whatever building material it used and will it grow if left.
grateful for any info. Norman

Hi Rich
You can protect yourself, cut the nest down and pop it in a bag, then stick it in the freezer. All the wasps and larvae will die and you can show the nest off at school after a day in the dep freeze!

Hi Rich, you would have to get in a professional to move the nest. If you try an over the counter wasp killer it will kill most of the wasps but beware as the growing larvae may survive, so when you open the nest live wasps will be inside.

it's sad when we have to kill them for safety but it is best to get in a professional if you can.
