Welcome to Cumbria

I love living in Cumbria and feel very lucky to be able to do so, hence the new category in my blog where I shall support Cumbria and shamelessly plug rural business ventures here.

Cumbria receives millions of visitors from all over the world each year, just last week on the London Underground I met an American couple on their way to Cumbria for a fell walking holiday.

Cumbria is located in the North West of England, bordering Scotland and contains the Lake District National Park with it’s diverse beauty of mountains and lakes. The county is virtually all rural, with the highest mountains in England, the wild Irish Sea on it’s west coast and a strong farming tradition.

Despite the name “Lake” District National Park there is actually only one official lake, Bassenthwaite Lake, with the remainder being “waters” or “meres”. We often hear people refer to ‘Lake Windermere’ but it is in fact simply Windermere.

The 14 main lakes cover 5669 hectares (1 hectare = 10,000 square metres). Due to lack of industrialisation in the county we still have ancient woodlands, flourishing wildlife and a host of archaeological sites. As this category builds up I hope I shall be able to help you see Cumbria through the eyes of someone living here and share with you just some of the reasons you need to get in your car and visit Cumbria.

To see why I love Cumbria please visit the Britain on View website and simply search for Cumbria, where you can see and buy professional photo’s of Cumbria. If you roll your mouse over the photos of buildings, church windows, landscapes, etc it will tell you the location to enable you to visit. I would recommend this site to anyone planning on coming to Cumbria and wondering what to see here.
