In our last home we had four big hedgehogs visiting my very small garden each night. They were such fun to watch - head butting each other and grunting. I now have one that I'm about to make a hibernation box for. I can't imagine why anyone would see them as pests. They cause no harm at all. On the contrary. I garden organically and I don't get any slug damage at all in my garden because hedgie helps to keep the ecosystem in balance. I wish slug pellets could be banned. They are evil things. If you must kill slugs just to save a few holes in your hostas, please use wildlife friendly ones. The blue ones are also terribly bad for your soil and plants. You are basically spreading poison around you if you use them. Not very healthy and fatal to a lot more than slugs - birds, hedgehogs, etc. etc.

Seriously cool post! We were just talking about how helpful hedgehogs are at keeping the gardens clear. Love the step by tutorial will definitely take a closer look at this when I get some time off, thanks again.

Nick:You know what they say: it`s very good to have a hedgehog around your house. I would keep one just to get rid of the snails.

So glad you included photographs at the end! I was reading through getting a little muddled and so breathed a sigh of relief with the photos. Great article that I have just added to Stumble Upon so hope you see an increase in traffic as a result :-)

Hi Jenn

Hedgehogs are a gardeners best friend, they eat the insects, slugs and snails which would otherwise munch their way through your vegetables and flowers.

Are hedgehogs good for your garden? I've never heard of anyone wanting to attract a hedgehog to their garden or yard. In the US they are considered to be a pest. That's obviously not the same in the UK..hmm.
